Introduction
Murmura ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use the Murmura application ("App").
We designed Murmura with a privacy-first philosophy. Your documents are yours — we process them locally on your device whenever possible and collect only the minimal data needed to deliver our services.
Information We Collect
Information You Provide
- Documents: PDFs, EPUBs, text files, and other documents you import into the App are stored locally on your device. We do not upload, access, or store your documents on our servers.
- Preferences: Voice selections, theme settings, reading progress, and other in-app preferences are stored locally on your device and optionally synced via iCloud.
Information Collected Automatically
- Apple Analytics: If you have opted into sharing analytics with app developers through your Apple device settings, we may receive anonymized and aggregated usage data through Apple's App Analytics platform. This data cannot be used to identify you personally.
- Crash Reports: We may receive anonymized crash reports through Apple's crash reporting tools to help us improve app stability.
Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect personal identifiers (name, email, phone number) unless you contact us directly.
- We do not use third-party analytics SDKs, tracking pixels, or advertising frameworks.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
Text-to-Speech Processing
To generate narration audio from your documents, Murmura sends text content to Microsoft's Edge Text-to-Speech service for audio synthesis. This is necessary to convert your document text into natural-sounding speech.
- What is sent: The text content of the document blocks you choose to narrate.
- What is NOT sent: File metadata, your name, device identifiers, or any other personal information.
- Data handling by Microsoft: Microsoft processes the text solely for the purpose of generating audio. Please refer to Microsoft's Privacy Statement for details on how they handle data processed through their services.
Once narration audio is generated, it is cached locally on your device so subsequent playback does not require re-sending the text.
iCloud & CloudKit Sync
If you enable iCloud sync, your library metadata, reading progress, and preferences are synced across your Apple devices using Apple's CloudKit infrastructure.
- CloudKit data is stored in your personal iCloud account and is encrypted in transit and at rest.
- We do not have direct access to your CloudKit data.
- You can disable iCloud sync at any time in the App settings or your device's iCloud settings.
For more information, see Apple's Privacy Policy.
Data Storage & Retention
- Local storage: All documents, narration caches, and preferences are stored on your device in the App's sandboxed container.
- No server-side storage: We do not maintain servers that store your documents or personal data.
- Deletion: Deleting a document from Murmura removes all associated data (text blocks, narration cache, metadata) from your device. Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored data.
Third-Party Services
Murmura uses the following third-party services:
- Microsoft Edge TTS: Text-to-speech audio generation (text is sent to Microsoft servers). See Microsoft's Privacy Statement.
- Apple CloudKit: Optional cross-device sync via your iCloud account. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Apple StoreKit: In-app purchase processing. All payment data is handled by Apple. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
We do not integrate any advertising networks, social media SDKs, or third-party analytics platforms.
Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information:
- All data is stored within Apple's sandboxed app environment, which prevents other apps from accessing your data.
- Communication with the text-to-speech service uses HTTPS encryption.
- CloudKit data is encrypted by Apple both in transit and at rest.
GDPR Compliance
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA), you have certain data protection rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR):
- Right to access: You can access all your data directly within the App — it is stored locally on your device.
- Right to rectification: You can modify your data directly within the App.
- Right to erasure: You can delete any document or all data by removing items from the App or uninstalling it.
- Right to data portability: Your original documents remain in their original format and can be exported at any time.
- Right to object: You can disable iCloud sync and Apple analytics at any time.
Since we do not collect or store personal data on our servers, most data rights are exercisable directly on your device without contacting us. If you have questions about your rights, please contact us at support@murmura.app.
Children's Privacy
Murmura is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@murmura.app, and we will take steps to address the situation.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make changes, we will update the "Effective date" at the top of this page and, for significant changes, provide notice within the App. Your continued use of Murmura after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
