Frequently Asked Questions

Tap the + button in your Library to open the document picker. You can import files from your device storage, iCloud Drive, or any connected cloud service (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) through the iOS Files app. You can also use the iOS Share Sheet — open a document in another app, tap Share, and select Murmura.

Murmura will automatically parse the document into readable text blocks, generate a cover thumbnail (for PDFs), and add it to your library.

Murmura supports a wide range of document formats:

Fully Supported:

  • PDF (.pdf) — including text-based and some scanned PDFs
  • EPUB (.epub) — standard e-book format
  • Plain Text (.txt) — raw text files
  • Markdown (.md) — with heading, list, and quote parsing

Coming Soon:

  • Web URLs — paste a link and Murmura extracts the article
  • Scanned Documents — OCR-powered text extraction
  • DOCX — Microsoft Word documents

When you tap the Play button, Murmura sends your document's text to Microsoft's neural text-to-speech engine. Microsoft's AI generates natural, human-like speech audio and returns precise word-level timing data.

Murmura then plays the audio while synchronizing each word in the text with the narration — creating a karaoke-style highlighting effect. The currently spoken word is highlighted, and non-active text gently dims so your focus stays right where it should be.

Generated audio is cached on your device, so subsequent plays don't require an internet connection.

Yes! Once narration has been generated for a document, the audio is cached on your device. You can listen to any previously generated narration without an internet connection — perfect for commutes, flights, or areas with poor connectivity.

You will need an internet connection to:

  • Generate narration for the first time (or after changing voices)
  • Browse and preview new voices
  • Sync your library across devices via iCloud

Reading documents without narration (just text) works completely offline.

Open any document in the Reader view and tap the voice icon in the toolbar. This opens the Voice Picker, where you can:

  • Browse 300+ voices grouped by language and gender
  • Preview any voice with a short sample
  • Set a preferred voice for the current document

Each document can have its own voice preference. When you change voices, the narration cache for that document is refreshed the next time you play.

Free users have access to 2 voices (Andrew and Jenny). Pro users can access all 300+ voices.

Murmura Pro unlocks the full experience:

  • Optional iCloud sync uses Apple's encrypted CloudKit infrastructure.
